In your experience, does “marketing spend” (as a percentage of revenue) typically include marketing salaries? I typically look at it both ways for our business. I’m curious what other companies do (and to get an apples-to-apples comparison).

I have been looking for some 3rd party research done for some of my clients to not only help them with their planning, but also to sustain my position as their marketing consultant. Thanks again.

A very good summary of information we often have to access from multiple sources.

Good stuff Marc. I’ve spent so much of my time convincing sales people that “marketing is your friend.” The path to the next customer gets more complex every day. With that complexity comes opportunity.

We see similar trends with our clients. I think it is notable that marketing spending seems to decline in downturns, even though that is when it is most needed.

Marketing and innovation produce results; all the rest are costs.” Especially liked your points related to asking yourself the key questions, assessing results and keeping your eye on the big picture.
